Nyla McGee Steps Into Leadership at LA City Care With a Mission to Close the Mental Health Access Gap

LOS ANGELES — For Nyla McGee, leadership is about more than holding a title. It is about making sure the people who have historically been overlooked have access to the care, resources and support they deserve.

That mission is taking center stage as McGee steps into her new role as Vice President of LA City Care Health Services, where she will help lead efforts to expand access to high-quality mental health services across Los Angeles, particularly in communities where economic and systemic barriers can make getting care significantly more difficult.

Her appointment represents more than an executive move. It reflects a larger conversation taking place across America about mental health equity and a fundamental question: Should the quality of mental health care someone receives be determined by where they live or how much money they make?

For McGee, the answer is unequivocal.

McGee arrives at the executive level with an academic record rooted in achievement.

A proud graduate of Howard University, one of the nation’s most celebrated historically Black universities, McGee graduated summa cum laude and at the top of her class.

But credentials alone do not define the vision she brings to LA City Care.

At the heart of McGee’s leadership philosophy is the belief that excellence in health care should not be reserved for affluent neighborhoods. Families facing financial hardship, limited resources or other barriers should still be able to receive professional, compassionate and high-quality mental health services.

That principle will help guide her work as Vice President.

McGee is expected to play a key role in advancing LA City Care’s efforts to break down barriers to treatment, strengthen relationships with communities and community organizations, and increase access to mental health resources throughout Los Angeles.

Mental Health Care Is Community Care

The significance of that work extends beyond the walls of any individual clinic or health care organization.

Mental health touches families, schools, workplaces and neighborhoods. When people cannot obtain appropriate care, the consequences can ripple through virtually every part of their lives.

Expanding access therefore requires more than simply making services available. It requires building trust, meeting communities where they are and creating systems in which individuals feel seen, respected and supported.

For underserved communities, that distinction can be particularly important.

McGee’s vision places dignity at the center of the equation: quality care should not be viewed as a privilege reserved for those with greater financial resources.
