Some careers burn bright and fade. Others keep finding new rooms to fill. Chaz Lamar Shepherd belongs firmly to the second kind.

With 2026 marking the 30th anniversary of the iconic film Set It Off, the timing could not be better to revisit one of the most enduring talents of his generation. For Black Beat Magazine, this feature carries a special meaning. Chaz was previously featured in our pages during the height of his career as a 90s heartthrob, which makes this a true full-circle moment for both the publication and the readers who grew up watching him.

While many remember him from Set It Off, his resume reads like a tour through three decades of Black television and film. The Temptations. The Game. Moesha. Me and the Boys. 7th Heaven. Luke Cage. Each role added another layer to a career built on range and staying power.

A Stage Beyond the Screen

What sets Shepherd apart from many of his peers is that the camera was never the whole story. He has enjoyed a celebrated stage career, with performances in Broadway productions including Chicago, Dreamgirls, and The Color Purple. Those are not roles handed out lightly. They demand a performer who can act, sing, and command a live audience night after night.

Combined with his work in music and ministry, that theatrical foundation reveals an artist whose gifts were always bigger than any single medium.

A New Chapter Behind the Scenes

Today, Chaz Lamar Shepherd is stepping into a new chapter as a creative force behind the scenes.

He recently portrayed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Experiencing the Dream: MLK The Musical, which is set to return this year, with Shepherd currently in talks to direct the production. He is also serving as Director, Producer, and Music Composer on a separate project currently in development, a reflection of just how far his creative reach now extends.

Most recently, Chaz completed a residency at The Sun Rose in Los Angeles, where he showcased his talents as a vocalist and pianist to sold-out audiences. Beyond his work on screen and stage, he continues to perform as a vocalist and pianist and remains active in ministry, frequently invited to sing and deliver messages at churches, conferences, and community events. He is also well known for his roots with the West Angeles COGIC Choir.

Family remains close to the center of it all. Shepherd enjoys mentoring his daughter, who has followed in his footsteps as both an actress and singer, and the two occasionally share the stage together. It is a fitting continuation for an artist whose own story has always been about passing the gift forward.

From a 90s heartthrob on these very pages to a director, producer, and composer shaping the next generation, the throughline has always been the same: the work, and the calling behind it.

Thirty years after Set It Off introduced him to audiences who never forgot him, Chaz Lamar Shepherd is proving that reinvention and faith can carry a career far beyond its first act. The heartthrob became a craftsman. The actor became a creator. And the story is still being written.
